Why would it be sometimes beneficial for cells to increase metabolism without any growth?

However, there seems to be differences in gene expression under the two conditions. When the cell is grown with glucose present, the nrd genes are repressed, as normally, their expression is associated with anaerobic growth and subsequently slower metabolism. But since the growth rates with or without glucose present doesn’t seem to be that different, why would it be beneficial for the cell to increase its metabolism without growth?

My BMI is 28.3, which means that I’m 1.7 points away from being obese, even though I don’t look too much like it. I’m 5′1” if that helps and when the school year comes back, I’m going to need to burn fat a lot and exercise. But the thing is, I need an EFFECTIVE workout to help me lose a lot of weight if I commit to it about twice a week. Got any ideas?
